ARTEFACT DESIGN

For my skills passport artefact I decided to make a headpiece for the Greek Goddess Artemis, Goddess of the hunt and the moon.

I started off this project by researching Artemis and creating a moodboard that captured her essence that I wanted to make sure carried through into my final piece.

After researching Artemis, I decided to research different headpieces. At first I wanted to base it off of the millinery headband that I had learnt how to make in my millinery sessions. I thought I could include a lot of wire work and could make a piece similar to Artemis' traditional moon crown.

Once I had done some research on headpieces, I created these designs. My aim with these designs was to incorporate antler or arrow like features to show her hunting side, red amaranths as this is the flower Artemis represents and of course the moon. I ended up choosing one of these to present during my artefact proposal.

I chose this design to present during my artefact proposal and thought that I could include a variety of techniques including beading, millinery flowers and working with millinery wire. However during the proposal I was given feedback that I could incorporate my character more into the design to truly show the essence that I had captured in the mood board. So, before starting to make my artefact I decided to use this feedback and continue my design process.

Before continuing, I looked back over my skills passport sessions and found that I had enjoyed using sinamay and while researching sinamay hats, I decided that I wanted to challenge myself and make a headpiece slightly more extravagant. From this research board I loved the different shapes that could be created with sinamay and how it could be combined with different materials and decided to draw my designs, using this page as my inspiration.

These are three designs that I drew that were inspired by my sinamay research board. I still made sure to incorporate elements of the stag, the red amaranth and the moon into the designs just like in my previous designs. This way I could make sure that my design reflected my character.

This is my final illustration of my design. I wanted to incorporate the textures into the illustration so I had a better feel of how the artefact would look like in real life. I wrote notes around the illustration to make it clearer for myself and I also left room for experimentation as I wasn't sure how I was going to execute all of the steps to make the final headpiece.
